It\'s really my late, paternal aunt\'s story, but I was in the house a few times as a toddler, and always cried to be taken out.
It was after the war and there was a housing shortage, so Aunt and her extended family were allocated a Regency house that had been empty a long time (she soon found out why!). It had belonged to a local sawmill owner, and was a tall, gloomy, long-sided dwelling next to an alley. Her daughter-in-law used to sit in her bedroom, horified at hearing an elderly woman limping, with the aid of a cane, towards her door. She said she never saw the woman, but got a mental impression of someone resentful. There were poltergeist noises, like baths of water being thrown down the stairs. Every evening, an unseen man in heavy boots would fling open the front gate, march down the path, bang back the front door (which never moved at the time) and stamp his way down the hall into the kitchen. There were sighs, freezing touches of invisible hands, and a visiting nephew was almost flung from a top floor window. Aunt and the daughter-in-law were so frightened that they got night jobs, just to stay out of that house at peak ghosting times. They never had any luck, either. Illness beset the other children, Uncle couldn\'t keep a job, due to insomnia. When at last, after 4-5 years,they could move to brand-new houses, things improved for them, but the local authority kept that old place for sub-standard housing, and the disturbances continued, unabated. They even took off the Regency oak front door, but the booted gentleman didn\'t stop his noisy entrees. The place was long-abandoned before it was demolished, but I haven\'t found out whether the new flats on the site are haunted! |
