The sound of footsteps echo in the darkness when you know youre supposed to be alone and you just can’t shake that uncomfortable feeling that someone – or something – is watching. Suddenly there’s an unexplained draft and the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end. Just as it is for detective Fox Mulder, from the hit television show The X Files, it is incidents like these that Edinburgh University scientist Dr Caroline Watt finds irresistible. As a parapsychologist – the profession that gained worldwide attention in the 1984 movie hit Ghostbusters – Caroline has the somewhat unusual vocation of being an investigator of paranormal belief and psychic ability. |
Posted on Thursday, 8 May, 2008 | 17:15 | Comments: 1 |
This week GM's Gigan caught up with Nick Redfern and forwarded along the questions that our forum members on both Ghost Mysteries and Unexplained Mysteries suggested we ask him for our interview - our thanks to Nick for answering these for us, to Gigan for organising it and to those who submitted their suggestions for the interview.
Q: What spawned your interest in monster hunting? Have you ever felt to be in danger doing what you do, physical or otherwise?
N: My interest in cryptozoology really began when I was about 4 or 5 years old and me and my parents went on holiday to Scotland. We spent a day at Loch Ness, and my dad told me these ...

Ghostbusters are being called to a haunted hotel in Cheddar to find out if guests from the afterlife are 'checking in'. Managers at Cox's Mill in The Cliffs have called on Ghost Hunters South West to investigate the ghostly goings on which have been reported by staff, locals and guests.Manager Marz Harvey said: "I took over the job about nine months ago and everyone said the pub has a ghost and stories about hauntings."I didn't really pay much attention as every old building supposedly has a ghost, but then guests who couldn't have known what local people were saying started to report the same stories."We invited the paranormal group in April and it did a study in the...

Exorcist calls time on pub poltergeist |
Posted on Saturday, 3 May, 2008 | 3:30 | Comments: 0 |
A exorcist was called in to purge a haunted pub after it was claimed a ghost tried to kill a barmaid and her brother. Ghostbuster Ian Lawman, 39, had to take drastic action against the violent poltergeist, believed to be a former landlord at the 230-year-old Crown Inn pub in Farnham Common. Lainie Rutter and her brother, Mitchell, have been living in fear in a small flat at the pub. They struggled to get a night’s sleep after furniture mysteriously moved across the floor, and shelves fell off the wall. The final straw came for pub owner Mike Orme when a fire broke out and a terrified manager refused to live at the Crown Lane local because of the bizarre goings on. Mr ...

Ghosthunters check out rural pub |
Posted on Thursday, 1 May, 2008 | 6:12 | Comments: 0 |

Things have been going bump in the night, and the daytime, at a rural Norfolk pub. Gravy boats, trays and chocolate boxes have flown off shelves, unexplained glasses of wine left in the kitchen and staff and customers have seen a figure by a corner wine cabinet on a number of occasions. Julie Gallop, landlady at the Butchers Arms pub in East Ruston near North Walsham, has experienced these things for herself, but a self-confessed cynic, she wanted to prove that she is not just seeing things. So who's she gonna call? The ghosthunters. When a friend suggested enlisting the services of the paranormal investigators, she jumped at the opportunity. At the weekend, a team of thr...

Why are ghosts seen wearing clothes ? |
Posted on Tuesday, 29 April, 2008 | 12:59 | Comments: 1 |
Why do ghosts need clothes? No one really seems to know, but it’s possible that in most cases, ghosts seen wearing clothing are simply “residual” images – imprints or memories that linger on the atmosphere of a place like a recording. A ghost of this sort would have no “personality” and is simply like an old movie that just keeps playing. But what about ghosts that are not merely imprints? What about those which are true, traditional spirits who died and stayed behind? Many researchers feel that ghosts are made up of electromagnetic energy. This energy, inside of the body, forms what we call our spirit, soul or personality. Now, science cannot prove this energy o...

Gettysburg's haunted address |
Posted on Friday, 25 April, 2008 | 4:13 | Comments: 1 |
If you're looking to experience Civil War history, there's probably no better place than this quaint town in Adams County, where every house and field seems a reminder of that famous three-day battle back in July 1863. With the opening earlier this month of the new $125 million museum and visitor center at Gettysburg National Military Park, learning about this part of our nation's history will be even easier. Yet Gettysburg, if you believe in this kind of thing, also can be a pretty good place to see a ghost, given how many soldiers gave up their lives. Or so I've been told. I love a good ghost story as much as the next girl. But could specters past really still han...

Investigating a haunted police station |
Posted on Monday, 21 April, 2008 | 6:26 | Comments: 4 |
Slamming doors, phantom footsteps and typewriters that type on their own are signs workers say a police station is haunted. Now officers may have their proof on tape. Investigators from the Greater Pittsburgh Paranormal Society revealed their evidence at a news conference Wednesday. They showed audio and video recordings from inside the buildings that validated the rumors of hauntings for years. Members of the Pittsburgh Paranormal Society call the mysterious happenings a residual haunting. They found a cold spot in a cell and research showed there was a hanging in there in 1982. Other unexplained items caught on tape include footsteps, doors slamming and a cable b...

Ghost-hunters hold vigil in Saffron Walden |
Posted on Wednesday, 16 April, 2008 | 6:45 | Comments: 1 |
A paranormal society is offering town residents a chance to see the spooky side of Saffron Walden, at an all-night event taking place this Saturday. Not recommended for the fainthearted or easily scared, the seven-hour vigil at The Maltings in Saffron Walden is probably the best chance you will ever have to come face to face with an apparition. The ghost hunt is being organised by London Paranormal, an organisation formed in 2006 to conduct supernatural investigations into notorious haunted properties across the region. Chairman Ian Shillito said: "I have experienced many things that at present I can't explain. It seems Essex has an abundance of ghosts just waiting to in...

Someone left the lights on for Mickey Burrow and his team of ghost hunters.Or maybe something. As the group of paranormal hobbyists prepared to spend Saturday night in an old, vacant fire station in the Madera County foothills, Burrow got a surprise right off the bat.He discovered the light in the basement glowing. But Cal Fire Capt. Craig Waag -- who stopped by to make sure everything was OK -- insisted that he had turned off the light after an inspection Friday. And he had locked the door.It was an eerie start to an overnight operation to prove scientifically whether there's any evidence of the fire station's reputed inhabitant -- a ghost known to locals as Homer...
