“Haunted tree” in Orissa village creates panic
Manglojodi, Orissa: Panic-stricken residents of an eastern Indian village say a killer ghost that lives on a tree stalks them, bringing true the prophesy of a possessed girl. Unable to bear the torture for long some of the braver ones in Manglojodi, a hamlet in Khurda district of eastern Orissa state pulled down the tree.
The story apparently did not stop there.
Villagers are too scared to come out of their homes once dusk falls, the favourite time of the 'Ghost who walks" to make its evening rounds.
Villagers refuse to go near the place where the tree stood, as they fear that they will meet the same fate of seven people who died at the hands of the ghost.
Bhawani Behra, a 19-year-old boy who had helped raze the tree, was the latest victim.
He died coughing up blood and told his sister Anasuya before dying that he saw a white cat moving spookily about the tree.
"Till date seven people have died after touching that tree since March. Everybody is scared of going anywhere near the tree. Children do not go to school and college anymore. By six in the evening, all is quiet and people are scared to go out even to the local shop. The murderous spirit seems to have paralysed our village," said Anasuya.
Children take a circuitous route to school and villagers talk in hushed tones, lest the deadly ghost hear them.
The felled tree still evokes panic amongst villagers as the tale acquires newer dimensions, adding credibility to the words of a possessed girl who had prophesied that the ghost would claim 21 lives.
"The prophecy of a possessed girl seems to be coming true. The spirit seems to have gone on a killing spree. Some time ago, the spirit had possessed the body of a young girl and said that it will take 21 lives before Dussehra (a Hindu festival)," said Laxmidhar Behra, the chief of the village's governing council.
In India's rural areas superstition is quite prevalent and villagers prefer black magic to medical treatment.
Social activists blame lack of basic health care facilities for the widespread superstitions.

I wish they had mentioned how the other 6 people died. There's a very tiny picture of the tree at the source, but it's so difficult to make out any detail, I don't even know why they included it with the article.
Think this is a case of self-fulfilling prophecy, coincidence, or ghost homicide? I'm guessing a mix of the first two.

You're right it does get a little confusing, and I think I managed to misunderstand it myself. I thought it was a spirit of a deceased girl who had been possessed before her death, that was haunting the tree. Now that I reread it, I'm going to retract that. It looks like they believe that a spirit was possesing the girl, made a prophecy through her, and then left the girl and went into the tree. Since the tree is something the villagers all seem to pass everyday when going to school and whatnot, if an incident happened where someone died close to the tree soon after the prophecy, then it makes it easy to blame the tree for it. Delusion brought on by mass hysteria. That's just my 2 cents tho
This seems quite unusual that the girl's spirit transferred to the tree- this is something I've not heard of, or not in real life anyway. Although mass hysteria could be a possibility of explaining why so many people have died since passing the tree, it seems quite strange to me that such a large number of people have died in quite a short space of time in one area- I'm unsure if this could be a coincidence.
Could the girls spirit be restless because she didn't get a proper burial?
Maybe they should find out why she's murdering people in such a vicious way.

k there's definately some confusion regarding this article. I want to point out again something I mentioned in a above post:

I apologise for the confusion on that, I misread the article the first time around. The girl is still among the living, it's the spirit that was possessing the girl that the villagers believe is now possessing the tree. When the spirit was possessing the girl, it made the prophecy through her that it was going to kill people. Now that it's out of the girl and in the tree, they believe it was working through the tree to fullfill its prophecy. Hope that helps to clarify
Let me get this straight.
Some of you after reading this story are entertaining the thoughts that a Spirit can murder people and possess a tree yet find my story unbelievable when I write that three of my realtives and the spirit of a man I knew before he died have been just sitting inside my body since l985 the first anniversary of his death making my life miserable.
And why doesn't god and Jesus bring them out?
And why doesn't a Priest or a Deliverance minister bring them out?
Could be because no one in the Spirit World controls any spirit and they can do whatever they want to if they can get enough people frightened to believe they have the power to kill a human.
Its been my experience the only real power a Spirit has is the power to frighten and take advantage of peoples fear of the Dead and in my case the four who have been sitting inside my body since l985 have the tables turned on them and are now too frightened to leave my body because another Spirit who says he is God has threatened to destroy them if they don't repent.
They refuse to repent and or leave my body and I am refusing to let them write through me now unless they leave my body, and I am refusing to let them be mentioned in any of my copy except when I personally want to comment on posts like this.
Believe me a Spirit is not possessing a tree and they are not murdering people unless of course they can sit inside the body and while a person is driving they might cause them to make a driving error if the human lets their guard down and the spirit for a moment takes over the thoughts and actions which can happen on occassion.
Note: I am not trying to be mean here its just that I opened an E-Mail a little while ago where a person is telling me they have invented an electrical apparatus which they turn on and it causes ghosts to flow into their home and they of course want to sell this to some Gullable people.
I wrote them an E-Mail giving them a piece of my mind and told them if they want to communicate with Spirits just listen to the ones around you and write them a note and ask them if they would like to appear to you and write with you to help prove they are alive in the Spirit World.
Keep in mind there are not enough Channells for Spirit on Earth and once you attract them you might have the same problems I have had where my Relatives said they saw me first and I should agree to write with them and send the others away if I want them to get out of my body.
I have said no they cannot control me but if they get out of my body and stop what they are doing and let me alone for a while its possible they might return and apologize then perhaps I will let them write in the future, simply because they are alive in the Spirit World and I am trying to prove this.
If they don't agree they should now get out of my body and go possess a tree and or tell stories to those they might still be able to frighten I for one am no longer afraid of the dead.

Too true! My thought is they haven't got a priest there because...well...it's a little village in India and they don't have a catholic priest. My personal opinion on the article is the girl faked being possesed and the whole tree thing is just a mixture of coincidence/mass hysteria/self-fullfilling prophecy and bad health care. Judging from posts I've seen of namasivayam's, girls faking possession isn't all that uncommon in that part of the world.
Hmm, if this supposed ghost is real. That sucks for the people.
