SVPS & I are investigating the infamous Waverly Hills Sanatorium this summer. For those who are unfamiliar with Waverly Hills, it is considered by many to be one of the most haunted locations in the United States. A former tuberculosis hospital, it is estimated that over 60,000 patients died at Waverly Hills. In the sixties it became Woodhaven, (a geriatrics hospital) & was shut down by the state due to patient abuse in the early eighties.

Paranormal phenomena reported at Waverly Hills includes, “moving shadows” or shadow people, moving objects, apparitions of children running through the halls, the apparition of a boy bouncing a ball, the apparition of an injured elderly woman, the apparition of an eyeless girl, etcetera.

I am especially interested in investigating the tunnel, (a.k.a. the body chute). Completed in 1926, this inclined corridor was first constructed for workers to be able to move supplies in and out of the building from the railroad spur at the bottom of the hill. One side of the tunnel consists of concrete steps while the other is made up of a motorized rail and cable system. At some point it was decided that the tunnel could also be used to discreetly transport bodies off of the hill without other patients witnessing it, thereby protecting their morale. The bodies of the dead were placed on a cart and then lowered to the bottom.

If you have been to Waverly hills & would like to share your experience, please feel free to leave me a comment.

Mostly I like horror - Stephen King, Dean Koontz and the like - but I will read almost anything. I also love to write fiction and my dream is to one day see my name on the cover of a book. How sweet would that be??

How cool! I would LOVE to go there. We don't have anything like that around here, just local stuff and most have been found to have been made up.
