There is a one-time railroad tunnel in southern WV that leads into the town of Dingess and is named for it. In the 1960's, it was converted into a highway access. Almost a mile long and wide enough for only one-lane traffic, it makes for a discomforting experience. Cars about to enter from one end must check to see if any headlights are in view before venturing forth. The tunnel has a history of accidents and murders, and ghost sightings have been reported there. However, my parents experienced something different in the early 1970's. As their car passed through the tunnel, my mother looked at my skeptic father and asked what he heard. "A train", he replied. And so did she.
